The mother of New York City police Officer Rosa Rodriguez is praying for her daughter's recovery after Rodriguez was hurt while responding to a fire last weekend in Coney island.

"Can you imagine how any mother would feel?" said Carmen Rodriguez Thursday night.

Her daughter is now in a hospital bed fighting for her life.

Rosa Rodriguez charged into a burning apartment building Sunday on Coney Island. She and her partner were overcome with smoke; Officer Dennis Guerra died this week from severe smoke inhalation.

While Rodriguez, a mother of four, fights for her life, her mother is now taking care of her grandchildren.

"My daughter is a very good person," Rodriguez said. "I am very proud of her. I ask God to leave her here with us, with her children."

She said while grocery shopping with the children on Wednesday, someone mistakenly told her that her daughter had died.

"But she's not dead. The person was wrong. I don't talk to anyone anymore," said Carmen Rodriguez.

She did not talk about Marcell Dockery, 16, who is charged with starting the fire because he was bored. She said she doesn't have time to think about him right now.

"I think she's going to make it," Rodriguez said of her daughter.. "Everyone she knows in Puerto Rico is praying for her. It's in the hands of God."
