A 5-year-old boy was struck and killed on a Brooklyn street Sunday night by an oncoming car.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Empire Boulevard in the Crown Heights section, where witnesses say the boy was crossing the street with his mother.

The preliminary investigation determined the boy was crossing mid-block when he was struck by a double parked minivan that was backing up in the roadway.

Rashard Charles was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Reports say the driver may have not realized she hit the child, but then came back to the scene.

Police say 23- year-old Elizabeth Mayard is facing a number of charges, including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and reckless driving.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
