Delays persist after tractor-trailer crash shuts New Jersey Turnpike

March 5, 2014 5:59:07 AM PST
Commuters in the Garden State faced a nightmare morning commute after a major accident shut down the northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike early Wednesday.

A tractor-trailer jackknifed just north of Exit 8, near the Molly Pitcher Service Area, in Cranbury just before 6 a.m. Another vehicle was also flipped onto its side next behind the truck's cab, and a second tractor-trailer was involved in the crash.

The northbound side was completely closed for more than an hour, with traffic backed up for miles and building. The accident occurred in a construction zone, with narrow shoulders that were impassible.

Rubbernecking delays were also extensive in the still-open southbound lanes, which emergency vehicles had to use to reach the scene.

The accident was cleared shortly after 7 a.m. and the lanes reopened, but extensive residual delays persisted for more than two hours.

Thankfully, only one minor injury was reported.
