There is a little relief coming to pets this brutal winter. The ASPCA in New York City is now providing free shelter for at-risk dogs that are being left out in the cold.

The program is called Operation Gimme Shelter, and it's partnered by New York Cares and the NYPD's Community Affairs Office.

The NYPD says reports are climbing about dogs being left outside without proper shelter.

The ASPCA says many of the people involved report that they lack the resources to provide housing for their pets.

As of now, the pilot program is providing free dog houses only in Jamaica, Queens. Participants also get ID tags, a bag of dog food, behavioral support for their dogs, and educational materials.
