Firefighters are trying to get the upper hand on a raging fire that spread to several businesses in Suffolk County.

Huge flames began pouring out of a restaurant in a 2-story commercial building on New York Avenue in Huntington Village around 7 p.m. Saturday. The fire then spread to a nail salon and a law office.

The fire was placed under control, but just before 11 p.m., it was still burning. Firefighters used multiple ladders in different angles, to try to control the hotspots throughout the building.

Witnesses say it is unbelievable how quickly the fire moved.

"Once the pole went on fire, that's when you started getting explosions," said Frank McHugh, who works across the street.

There is a gas station next door to where the fire broke out. As a precaution, firefighters doused the gas station with water to prevent anything from igniting.

A Suffolk County police officer was injured in the blaze after he fell. He was transported to a local hospital to receive stitches and is expected to be okay. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known.
