There have been at least two incidents of razor blades found in butter at the Best Market in Holmdel.
"I can't believe someone would do that," a shopper said.
It seems, for some reason, someone did.
On January 20, a shopper reported opening an 8-ounce package of Kerrygold butter at home and finding a razor blade. Five days later, it happened again.
"That one, the package was cut open, the razor was inserted into the butter and closed up," said Lt. Mike Smith of the Holmdel Police.
"It's terrible and this is a great market that serves the community well," said Bernadette Tricozzi, a resident of Middletown. "[I] hope they find who did it"
Best Market was alerted and immediately pulled the 8-ounce Kerrygold butter from all of its 16 stores in the tri-state area.
"This appears to be an isolated incident," Kerrygold said in a statement. "We do not believe this tampering incident occurred during the manufacturing or packaging of our product.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now also involved in the investigation.
"It's a shame someone would do this," said Keyport resident Jack Burke. "Why would they want to?"
If you have any of the butter, it might be wise to check it before you use it.
