Firefighters battle ice, cold in pair of Hollis fires

Firefighters battled the ice and cold in separate fires that broke out in Hollis, Queens, almost simultaneously overnight Wednesday.

One fire started at a home on 191st Street and 109th Avenue around 10:30 and quickly grew to a second alarm.

Crews had to use a blow torch on one rig that had iced over, but managed to get the flames under control in about an hour.

The second fire, also a two-alarm blaze, broke out on 198th Street and 104th Avenue around 11:30 p.m., as the first fire was waning

Authorities say the flames started in the basement and spread to the first floor.

It took firefighters a little more than two hours to contain the flames.

No one was seriously hurt in either fire.

The causes remain under investigation.
