Tonight, Indian security removed concrete barriers from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. It's in reaction to the arrest in Manhattan of India's Deputy Consul-General, Devyani Khobragade. She has been charged ? by the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, Indian-born Preet Bharara, with paying her housekeeper about $3 an hour ? less than half the minimum wage, and with lying on a Visa. India is claiming diplomatic immunity and officials are furious that she was strip-searched when she was arrested. (That seems more than a tad extreme, no?)
State Dept. regs say clearly that diplomats "may not be arrested or detained pending trial, except in the case of a grave crime and pursuant to a decision of a competent judicial authority."
Sec. of State Kerry says he "regrets" the incident. But the battle is on. We'll have the latest, tonight at 11.
We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
