An assistant basketball coach at a northern New Jersey high school has been suspended with pay following his arrest on drug possession charges.

The move comes after Jimmie D. Smith was arrested Wednesday by detectives from the Attorney General's Office. His bail was set at $500,000, and he could face more than 20 years in prison if convicted.

Authorities said Smith had more than 7 ounces of cocaine that he allegedly intended to distribute. They also claimed he struck a law enforcement car with his SUV and assaulted detectives during his arrest.

The 41-year-old Paterson resident is an instructional aide and assistant coach for the freshman team at John F. Kennedy High School. He's worked in the Paterson district since 1999.
