"This may not be a fancy store, it's not fancy, but you made it here, and you sell it there," says Dorman.
This is the way things have been since the store first opened on Coney Island. It was called "Philips", and Dorman was 17 when he got a job there.
"I was in high school, and I said 'this is going to be my summer?' by the end of the week, you couldn't get me out of there," adds Dorman.
Dorman later joined the army where they called him Taffy, and the candy experience stuck. When he returned home, he bought the shop. Then, a decade ago, he moved "Philips" to Staten Island.
Brooklyn's loss has been Staten Island's gain.
Philips has egg creams made with Fox's syrup for just 75 cents.
Philips has the flavors of yesteryear, with some modern touches like cake pops, made by Dorman's daughter, Maria.
"Everyone who comes in here is happy, you know, because you're giving them candy," says Maria.
Customers also get to experience her dad, who at 83, still works 12 hours a day, every day. Maybe it is all the sugar, or maybe it is just the sweet life of a candy man.
