Shutdown of Brooklyn hospital postponed

A shutdown of Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, scheduled to begin Monday, has been postponed at least until September 11th, according to New York City Public Advocate and Democratic mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio.

De Blasio says the move by the state Health Department follows legal action taken in federal bankruptcy court.

De Blasio's action argued the department rushed ahead with approving Interfaith's closure plan without proper oversight by disregarding the 90-day review period required under law.

The department asked the court for a postponement, acknowledging the "closure plan does not yet meet the Department's requirements ? to assure a carefully planned closure."

The reprieve provides further time for the Bedford-Stuyvesant hospital and its supporters to develop a restructuring plan to save the facility.

"Interfaith looked to be hours away from beginning a long slide to closure?and we've stopped it in its tracks. The State was wrong to race ahead to padlock this hospital. Now we have an opportunity to put a real plan in place that preserves the vital healthcare Bed-Stuy and Brooklyn desperately need," said de Blasio.
