12-time marathoner celebrates her brother's first ING NYC Marathon

Meredith Simmons wrote a list in 2009 "50 things to do in 10 years" and last on the list was to run the NYC marathon. She signed up to run her first race for charity.

"Once I did it, I thought I'd found the meaning to life," Simmons said.

The bucket list has paid off for more than just her - it's helped charities and her own family.

Finding meaning in her races has never meant more than it will this year.

"It's my 13th marathon when I finish on Nov. 3, but my younger brother is running his first marathon this year," she said.

She explains that he's had had a long road to get here.

"He had been involved with criminal justice system and drugs and the law and in some ways running has been his salvation. Almost to the day, 6 years ago I was watching him in front of judge and then watching him on the finish line on race day will be a complete transformation. I am so proud of him," Simmons said.

Meredith says running for her own personal reasons is complimented by raising money for Team for Kids. She explained that it's not just a way for you to be committed to the project and your training but it's a way to get people involved in a community. And involving her brother in her running and training for a marathon has made all the difference to her family. Joining Team for Kids is just another way to pay it forward.
