5-year-old boy hurt on roller coaster on Coney Island

The family of a 5-year-old who got hurt after falling off a Coney Island roller coaster is talking about what happened.

His sister says her brother got scared, somehow got underneath the safety bar, and jumped.

"I was super scared and my mom was crying like crazy then she ever been before," said Aparjila Sutradhar, the victim's sister.

8-year-old Aparjila Sutradhar says she tried to hang on to her 5-year-old brother as he wiggled his way under a roller coaster lap bar Wednesday night, but she couldn't hang out.

He got scared and jumped off, landing between the ride and the track.

"He was about to fall down, so I held him, but I couldn't hold him that long, and then he fell," Aparjila Sutradhar said.

Cell phone video shows paramedics rushing 5-year-old Pradipla Sutradhar to an ambulance. His leg was broken after investigators say he jumped off the Sea Serpent roller coaster kiddie ride at a Coney Island amusement park.

Inspectors spent the day investigating the ride, but the park's operator says no violations were found.

"My family's been here for 43 years," said Dennis Vourderis, the Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park vice president.

Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park is a family business and Vice-president Dennis Vourderis is taking this incident to heart.

"We want to prevent anything like this happening again, so we will listen to what the city engineers and inspectors recommend," Vourderis said.

Vourderis says the Sea Serpent has been up to code for 15 years and is inspected bi-annually by the city.

But safety expert Dr. C. J. Abraham says more could be done.

In addition to a lap bar, Abraham says the roller coaster should have individual safety harnesses.

"The fact is that he wasn't restrained with a seat belt that would have kept him in place the whole time," Abraham said.

As for 5-year-old Pradipla who got hurt, his sister says he's doing just fine.

"The doctor said everything is good and after one or two weeks he'll come home," Aparjila Sutradhar said.

The Coney Island amusement park remains open, but the roller coaster is closed.
