Specialty shops offer vintage looks

Looks from the 1920's are in vogue right now, thanks in part to 'The Great Gatsby' movie, and styles from other decades are also trending.

To get those looks on a budget, you can shop vintage.

There are specialty shops that carry looks from the last 100 years.

The key is finding just the right piece at the right price.

"People are a little more price conscious than they've been and vintage is a great way to save money on hot trends," says Tracey Lomrantz Lester.

Tracey is all about saving you money.

She's the editorial director of Gilt, an online shopping site that features great sales, even on high end vintage items, like Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

But Tracey showed us you can also shop vintage stores like Pippin in Chelsea to create a look.

"The arm party is a big trend right now, stacking up a lot of different kinds of bracelets," said Lester. "I think there's such a fun way to show your personal style."

They start at $18, and the most expensive one in the shop is $32, so even if you're buying four, it's still a bargain.

Sometimes one piece is all you need.

"You really want to make this the focus of your outfit, you don't want to put on too many accessories, too many other distracting colors. This is what it's all about," Lester said.

Long strand pearls and brooches channel the Gatsby look, and Bakelite pieces are a throwback to the '60s, also in vogue right now. But beware.

"When you're wearing vintage you don't want to look like you're wearing a costume, you don't want to do anything that's too matchy matchy," asid Lester.

At Cobblestones in the East Village you'll find lots of vintage clothes, embellished tops with a pair of jeans, perhaps a cotton army jacket.

"Something that creates a little contrast, so it doesn't look so dressy dressy," Lester said.

And in the heat, go demure with eyelet.

"This is something you wear to the beach, to a barbecue, put on a pair of heels and go to a fancy party," she said.

And finally, play with Pucci.

"Mod, sort of 1960's, having a really big moment right now, and nothing is more emblematic of the '60's than a great Pucci print," Tracey told us.

So how do you wear a bra in public? With a sheer top over it.

"Really anyone can pull it off. It's about putting on that one piece that's a nod to the vintage era," said Lester.

Another tip for shopping vintage: clip out looks you like from magazines and bring them along while you shop.

All the items we featured ranged from about $18 to $75. And of course you can check out www.Gilt.com for handbags and jewelry if there's no vintage shop near you.
