Counselors on hand at 2 schools in Newark following student murder, lockdown

Counselors are being made available today for students shaken by the incidents at two Newark schools following the shooting death of a student.

18 year old Paul Hudson Jr. a Weequahic High School student, was shot and killed minutes after leaving the school on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said Hudson was walking along Aldine Street, a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire, killing him.

Another school, 3 miles away, was placed on lockdown after three men ran into the school and into the principal's office.

The men were apparently seeking shelter from two assailants who were chasing them, Newark Mayor Cory Booker said.

The incident sparked a 65-minute lockdown at the building on Muhammad Ali Avenue. Louise A. Spencer, Eagle Academy and Newark Early College High School are located in the building.

Booker says officials didn't notify parents about the lockdown because they quickly determined there was no threat to students.
