SUNY votes to close Long Island College Hospital

March 19, 2013 3:26:31 PM PDT
SUNY has voted again to close Long Island College Hospital.

Officials said the decision was needed to stabilize the finances of Downstate Medical Center and preserve its 8,000 jobs and Brooklyn's only medical school.

Last week, a judge issued a temporary restraining order following the board's original vote to shut the facility.

The ruling said the SUNY board didn't comply with the open meetings law.

Caregivers and lawmakers have been fighting to keep the cash-strapped Cobble Hill facility open.

It's the only emergency room in the area.

Long Island College Hospital, founded in 1858, is a teaching hospital at Hicks and Amity Streets.

It's the only emergency room in the area.
