Milford organizes shovel brigade to clear the sidewalks

You can't blame Machelina Olanski for being tired.

For days she's been shoveling out her sidewalk. On Friday, volunteers cleared out her section of high street in Milford.

Dozens of volunteers fanned out through the still snow packed city. Schools are closed and sidewalks are impossible to navigate. On Monday, one person walking in the street was hit by a car and killed.

The city's public works department made the roads passable within a couple of days, but clearing sidewalks is the homeowners' responsibility. 38 inches of snow was just too much for many.

Mayor Ben Blake said city volunteers organized the shovel brigade to help clear the streets. 55 off duty police officers were part of the brigade.

The shoreline city is among others that are still digging out from the weekend storm that dumped more than 3 feet of snow in some areas.

The goal is to make it safer for children to walk to bus stops when schools re-open next week.
