911 operator spots gun on Staten Island bus, texts police

An off-duty NYPD 911 operator found herself reaching out for help, but she had to do it with text messages.

Coryse Hercules was afraid to call authorities, so she started texting a friend after she realized that a teenager riding the S40 bus with her was carrying a gun.

Authorities say Hercules was seated two seats away from the suspect on the same side of the bus and heard another passenger whisper to her boyfriend that the teenager had a gun.

The suspect heard her too, and reportedly announced, "Calm down. It's not serious. I carry it for protection."

Police used Hercules info to stop the bus and arrest the teen for carrying two loaded handguns in a backpack.

The suspect reportedly had three prior arrests, including forcible touching, fare beating and marijuana possession. He is now charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
