Father of man who jumped in tiger pit speaks

January 10, 2013 8:14:28 PM PST
The father of the young man who jumped into the tiger pit at the Bronx Zoo is speaking out for the first time.

For several months 25-year-old David Villalobos has been a mystery.

He has been staying silent and avoiding the media as he seeks treatment following his September death defying jump from the Bronx Zoo monorail into the cage housing a 400-pound Siberian tiger.

To the public it was an inexplicable moment of madness.

To the Mahopac, New York man's father the cause was obvious.

"The main problem is Adderall," he told Eyewitness News, "Adderall was the worst thing that ever happened to him."

Speaking at his home in Mahopac, David Villalobos' father insists Adderall has made his son's behavior erratic.

The drug is used to control Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD.

The elder Villalobos says he and his wife have pleaded with David's doctors to stop prescribing the drug.

The last several months since his son's brush with the tiger have been difficult.

"We love our children so much, so we've been struggling with this. He's my son, we love David," his father said.

In September, his father confirms that the 25-year-old had been getting over a break up with a girlfriend and dealing with what he called other issues as well.

But he is reluctant to talk about it all on camera, choosing instead to leave it up to his son to speak for himself when he appears in court.

"It's very personal for my son," his father said, "He's going to explain why he did it."
