Now, a state commission is set to recommend the installation of solid rolldown gates at subway station entrances.
Those gates could do more to keep water out compared to the plywood and sandbags the MTA relied on for the superstorm.
The commission is also looking at other things, including sea walls and the use of inflatable plugs for subway tunnels.
In addition, the two recent deaths on the subway tracks have transit officials thinking about adding safety barriers to train platforms.
While the barriers are common elsewhere, safety doors do not exist in New York City, mostly due to their high cost.
Now, a company is proposing to install the barriers for free, in exchange for advertising revenue.
More than 50 people died after they were hit by subways in 2012.
