Fire burns through several buildings in Orange

December 7, 2012 3:17:00 PM PST
Firefighters spent the early-morning hours battling a huge fire at an apartment building in downtown Orange, New Jersey.

The fast-moving flames ripped through the building on Main Street, starting in a first-floor nail salon around 1:45 a.m. and quickly spreading throughout the structure and to at least two neighboring buildings.

The fourth-alarm fire left more than a dozen residents homeless, and fears that the flames could spread persisted hours after firefighters arrived on the scene.

Heavy fire shot out the windows and through the roof, as residents fled and were being sheltered in a nearby bus.

The building houses stores on the first floor and residents above.

Main Street was closed as firefighters battled the blaze.

No one was seriously hurt, but two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
