Newark settles suit over filming of police

November 19, 2012 11:10:39 AM PST
The American Civil Liberties Union says Newark police have reached a settlement with a teenager who was handcuffed and detained for taking a cellphone video of officers responding to a 2010 incident on a transit bus. Khaliah Fitchette had accused police of illegally seizing her phone and deleting the video.

The young woman was a high school student at the time. She's now a sophomore at Cornell University.

Details of the settlement were not released, and Newark police did not respond to a request for comment.

But the ACLU notes Newark police put out a memo a year ago stating police can only stop public filming of police activities if it interferes with law enforcement operations.

Fitchette says it's important for everyone to know their rights and she's glad the case is behind her.
