The writer and blogger from the Upper West Side took out an ad on Craigslist, offering eight dollars an hour for someone to sit next to him and give him a slap any time he veered away from his work and towards social media.
It is a bit extreme, but pretty much anyone who uses social media will give the same complaint - that it's next to impossible to concentrate on anything. The distractions are not only annoying, but they also add up for big business, as tech expert Jonathan Erwin revealed in a study called "Social Media Monster". He talked to Eyewitness News on Friday via Skype.
"What we found in our research is that they're less efficient. People are communicating more, which is great, but to what end?" Erwin said.
As for Maneesh Sethi, he tracks his online activity with a free app he downloaded. He found that once he was slapped to attention, his productivity jumped from just 38 percent to 98 percent.
