NJ posts school bus safety records online

New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission is making it easier for parents to check the safety records of the buses that transport their children to school.

The agency announced Thursday it is making more information available in the 'school bus report cards' it posts online at njmvc.gov.

The website now posts the percentage of buses within a specific school yard or bus company that have passed inspection or been placed out of service.

It also lists the reasons for a bus failing inspection and subsequent inspection results.

The agency inspects 24,000 school vehicles twice a year.

Officials say nearly half of all schools vehicles are temporarily placed out of service following the 180-point inspections.

The MVC says about 95 percent are deemed safe after repair and re-inspection.
