Yom Kippur, Judaism's most important day of the year began at sundown Tuesday evening.

Members of congregation B'nai Avraham lit candles at their synagogue in Brooklyn Heights.

Yom Kippur is a time of redemption and atonement.

At sundown Wednesday, Jews around the world will hear the sound of the ram's horn, the shofar.

It signals the moment their fate is sealed for the next year.
