West Side to be sprayed for mosquitoes

August 28, 2012 6:14:46 PM PDT
New York City health officials say ground spraying to reduce mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus will be done in parts of Manhattan.

Spraying of the pesticide anvil is scheduled for Friday between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. on the West Side of Manhattan between West 58th and West 97th Streets from West Drive in Central Park to West End Avenue.

Officials say chances of experiencing medical problems from the spraying are low. However, residents may want to avoid exposure, particularly children and pregnant women, by staying indoors during the spraying.

At least 13 human cases of West Nile virus infection have been detected in New York so far this year, including the deaths of two older people in Onondaga and Nassau counties.
