Prescription card that offers major discounts

August 29, 2012 11:48:18 AM PDT
So many people skip their medication because they can't afford them, or their insurance doesn't cover it.

Here's one easy option that may help you save you money.

It's called big Apple RX, a prescription drug discount card.

It can save you on average 53 percent on generic drugs, 15 percent on brand name drugs.

"You can also use it for medical supplies smoking cessation aids, any kind of a cane, walker, heart monitor, any kind of supply you can get with a prescription," said Paul Casali with Big Apple RX.

Linda mason used it for asthma medication.

"It ended up taking a hundred of dollars off the price and it brought my medication down to $25," she said.

The discount prices are negotiated directly with the pharmacies, so there's no taxpayer money involved.

Since the Big Apple RX card was launched last year, New Yorkers have saved nearly $7.2 million on medications, but city health officials say more people should take advantage.

"Cost should not be the reason that you don't take good care of your diabetes or your asthma," said Dr. Amanda Parsons, NYC Health Department.

Chris Lowe from Queens hasn't had health insurance for 2 and a half years

"I've used it for antibiotics, and allergy medication...It's great, it's about 20% savings I'd say," Chris says.

If you have health insurance you can't use both discounts at the same time, but you can still try the card and see which one gives you the better deal.

You can also use it for medications that you need, but your insurance does not cover. You can get the card at pharmacies, by calling 311, or go online and print one yourself

You can also use the discount card for pet medication, if there's a human equivalent. And although it's called Big Apple RX, you can use it outside the big apple at any participating pharmacy in the country.
