Air conditioning compressors stolen from seniors

August 10, 2012 2:27:06 PM PDT
Some cold hearted thieves left a whole lot of senior citizens hot under the collar and everywhere else.

They stole the giant air conditioner compressor at a senior center in New Jersey and it's not the first time it's happened.

"Without the air I perspire, and I just can't handle it," said Billy Ferrell, a Jersey City senior.

In the summer months, a senior citizens centers like Collier Memorial, is a cool and dearly needed oasis for our beloved elders.

"Seniors come here because they don't have air at home," said Lawrence Eccleston, Director of Jersey City Senior Services.

But in the multipurpose room there a lot of activities take place.

"We do exercise, bingo; we have lunch here," said Inez Frye, Center Director.

The temperature has hovered around 79 to 84 degrees over the past two days, since thieves stole the compressor that cooled this room.

"I know it's hot, you know it's hot; we need those units," said Lloyd Stokes, Jersey City senior.

It's aggravating and frustrating; because this is the second time in two weeks a unit has been stolen.

When the center replaced the first one taken, thieves came back and took the new one too.

"Shame on you. I hope you get caught today," a senior said.

"It hurts them so much because it's an intrusion, they feel bad that greed has come between them and their quality of life," an official said.

So, to the culprits, the seniors say look at who you're hurting, people who've done their best in life who come here to fellowship, to stay cool, healthy, and well fed.

You've stolen a bit of their peace of mind.

"It's wrong. We have seniors here 70 to 90 years old and you're taking from them, it's bad, it's sad," a center official said.
