Eileen Fisher gives back by recycling clothes

August 7, 2012 2:51:26 PM PDT
Eileen Fisher's clothes are simple, comfortable, and timeless. And in the 24 years since she started designing clothes, she's developed a loyal following leading to a successful company that donates 10% of its profits.

But in 2008, when the markets crashed, her company's charitable ways were challenged.

So the company's donations committee got together to create a new business idea - recycling the clothes Fisher had already designed and sold.

The program is called Green Eileen - boutique stores that sell only used, already worn Eileen Fisher clothes, donated by customers and employees.

At Green Eileen stores, prices are very affordable.

Those donating not only get a tax write off, they also get a $5 gift card for every item donated.

Green Eileen gives back to community groups, women and girls initiatives in particular.

And the program is good for the environment as it keeps textiles out of landfills - helping to keep closets full.
