Surprise from the MTA

Bill Ritter's daily take on the news.
July 19, 2012 1:40:05 PM PDT
Ok, what's happened to the MTA? Has it been taken over by aliens? Have straphangers suddenly voted out management? How else to explain today's out-of-the-blue announcement that the MTA will expand service and delay its fare increase? Say what?

Now, before we go entirely overboard here, I should note that the fare hike is being delayed by just a couple of months. So it's not nirvana. But the agency suggesting that it suddenly has more funds than it thought it would, and so it's passing on those savings, sort of, to those who use the system.

This is just breaking as I write this, and we'll have the latest, tonight at 11.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.

And a program note: This Sunday at 11 a.m. on Eyewitness News Up Close, I interview Eliot Spitzer, the former New York Governor who resigned in a sex scandal. Spitzer, now a cable TV commentator and host, is on a campaign much like the campaigns he directed while in office - targeting wrongdoing by Wall Street. This time it's about the growing interest rate rigging scandal. I hope you tune in.

And one other note: I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow. This column will resume on July 30.
