A man carrying a handgun fired eight shots at a bear that attacked his dog Monday as he was walking near a reservoir in West Hartford, police said.

The shooting by 29-year-old Dan Sweeney was reported at 6:40 a.m. in a wooded area on the property of the Metropolitan District Commission, near Reservoir No. 6. Investigators were working to piece together what happened.

"They're trying to figure out exactly what happened," West Hartford police Lt. Jeff Rose told The Hartford Courant. "Were there people around? Was he in danger?"

The schnauzer was taken to a veterinarian and its condition was not known. At the time of the shooting, the dog was not on a leash, according to Paul Rego of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's wildlife division.

An entrance to the reservoirs to the south was closed for several hours because the bear had last been seen in the area. The bear was not found and the gate was reopened.

Chris Stone, an assistant counsel with the MDC, said guns are not permitted on its property.
