And tonight, still no word on when it will be up and running again.
The building is on Edward Grant Highway in the Highbridge section of The Bronx.
"I've been going up and down those steps and I have messed up hips," said Sheila Collymore.
Suzanne Guthridge is also a tenant in the building, and it takes her 20 minutes to get back to her apartment after walking her two dogs. "I have to go up and down the steps five times a day...It's so hard to breathe," she said.
After going days with no answers, yesterday tenants did receive a notice from management under their doors and the news was not good.
It said the fire department had shut down the elevator after finding several "serious immediately hazardous safety violations including a defective safety cable that prevents it from dropping and frayed electric wiring throughout."
Management did not return our calls, the fire department referred us to the Department of Buildings, which pointed out it would have posted an official notice, had they inspected the elevator but after talking with Eyewitness News they decided to send someone to the building to get to the bottom of things.
