The craze over lash extensions

June 4, 2012 3:01:11 PM PDT
Alexa Wolman doesn't bat an eye at spending an hour or two and more than a hundred bucks every month to get lash extensions.

She gets hers done by Soul Lee at the Kiehl's Spa 1851. Kiehl's is usually synonymous with all things natural, but lash extensions are hardly natural. We found some made of silk and synthetic, and women are clamoring for them.

First, Soul uses a collagen strip to hold down the lower lashes. The lash line is lightly cleaned, and then the lashes are applied one at a time. She uses glue to attach each extension to one existing lash.

Within 30 minutes the lashes are already looking fuller, and just before Soul's done, the lashes are curled, brushed and the glue dried.

They will stay on for 3-4 weeks, and then touch up will be needed, or about half as many lashes. Until then, no mascara is needed.

That's why extensions, despite the time and cost, are becoming almost as popular as bikini waxes and manicures.
