Transformer fire causes delays at Grand Central

May 8, 2012 8:00:14 PM PDT
A transformer fire in a Metro North tunnel leading to Grand Central caused rush hour delays above and below ground on Tuesday evening.

It all started when a transformer above tracks 28 and 29 caught fire at 6:15 p.m. The fire led to a manhole explosion on Park Avenue near East 50th Street at around 7 p.m.

The transformer fire caused a smoke condition in the tracks and inside 320 Park Avenue, a large office building. One person in the building was treated for smoke inhalation. The building also lost power. There was no evacuation of Grand Central.

Metro North trains were briefly stopped from coming into the terminal, and the disruption led to delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions. Train service was back to normal by Tuesday night.

Park Avenue was also shut down in both directions when the manhole exploded.
