The standoff unfolded on Carriage Lane in Levittown, where police say a 62-year-old retired school teacher had barricaded himself in a house.
He was described as emotionally disturbed. It was not clear if he had any weapons, but police said he was alone in the house.
Division Avenue High School and Summit Lane Elementary School were locked down as a precautionary measure, with the lockodwn being lifted just before 2:00 p.m.
Students were not being permitted to leave the buildings. A statement from the Levittown School District said police did not believe any students or staff members were in danger.
The incident began with a call placed at 8:03 a.m. When police arrived on the scene, the man refused to open the door.
A Nassau County Police spokesman said the person in the home surrendered early Monday afternoon.
The person was being sent to a hospital for a psychological evaluation and the investigation was ongoing.
