Off-duty corrections officer shot in Newark

An off-duty New Jersey corrections officer was shot in Newark early Tuesday.

Police say the victim was shot outside a child care center at Springfield Avenue and South 19th Street after 12:30 a.m.

The officer was taken to University Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

No arrests were immediately made.

The victim works at Northern State Prison in Newark, where he is a senior corrections officer.
