Young boy shot by stray bullet in Williamsburg

A young child is recovering in the hospital Tuesday after being struck by a stray bullet in Brooklyn, and police are searching for the gunman.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. on Broadway in Williamsburg, as the 10-year-old boy was walking down the street with his father.

Witnesses say at least two shots were fired after two groups of men got in a fight near the J and M subway lines. They say the shooting followed lots of yelling and screaming.

"I was in my room studying when I heard two gunshots," a nearby resident said. "After that, I heard a bit of commotion. There was some high-pitched woman's scream, there were a couple of older male voices arguing saying things like 'Get out of here,' 'what the,' you know, swearing."

The boy was hit in the torso, and the bullet went completely through his body. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries. He is listed in stable condition.

Anyone with information in regard to this missing man is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
