98 Nassau cops accept retirement incentive

April 2, 2012 5:19:56 AM PDT
The budget battle in Nassau County has prompted nearly 100 police officers to retire.

The officers have accepted a voluntary incentive to retire that will save the county more than $23 million in annual labor costs.

Among them were two commanders charged last month with conspiring to drop a 2009 burglary investigation against the son of a wealthy police benefactor.

Another 51 civilians also took incentives, saving the county an additional $4 million.

Nassau County's workforce has dropped by 19 percent since 2009.
