Mount Vernon officer killed in wrong-way crash

An off-duty Mount Vernon police officer apparently driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 in the Bronx was killed in a collision with a tractor trailer early Thursday.

Authorities say 29-year-old Reginald Velez, Jr., was drivng southbound in the northbound lanes near East Gun Hill Road around 2:30 a.m. when he struck the truck.

Velez' vehicle burst into flames, engulfing the car.

The tractor trailer driver was not injured.

The crash and investigation closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 for more than three hours.

Police believe the driver went the wrong way on a highway exit ramp.
