Elmwood Park board votes to eliminate bus routes

March 28, 2012 1:41:12 PM PDT
The school board in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, has voted to eliminate most school bus routes.

The change will save the town about $300,000, but it will force about 900 public school students to find another way to school.

Some might have to walk as far as two miles.

The 6-3 vote came after a 90-minute public debate, with many parents urging the board to sacrifice other programs instead.

The town is also considering a plan to impose a busing fee of about $50 a month to share the cost of bussing.
