NJ Assembly panel OKs Port Authority subpoenas

April 11, 2012 7:09:47 PM PDT
A state Assembly committee has approved plans to issue subpoenas as part of a probe into wasteful spending at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Democrats and Republicans on the Transportation panel were split over the proposal, which was passed Wednesday in a 6-4 vote.

Republicans questioned whether the effort was a politically motivated move by committee Chairman John Wisniewski who also serves as state Democratic Committee chairman.

But Democrats rejected the claim, saying that the Port Authority has been unresponsive to repeated requests for information on spending and toll increases. Wisniewski said Wednesday that he has four outstanding requests for documents from the agency.
