Protective genes found to promote longevity

January 9, 2012 7:21:41 PM PST
Some people have "protective genes" that allow them to live well past 100.

"Supercenturians" are people who live to be 110 or older and are extremely rare.

In a new study, U.S. scientists found evidence that genetics play a major role in living so long.

Although they have as many disease-related genes as everyone else, researchers found that supercenturians may have longevity-associated variants that cancel out bad genes.
