Police officers were in the parking lot of a Toys R Us in Holbrook preparing to set up surveillance when they saw a woman parked in a car tie a strap around her left arm at 1:20 p.m. on Thursday.
As the officers approached the vehicle, they say they saw 29-year-old Crystal Webberly prepare to inject herself with heroin while her 2-month-old son sat in the backseat.
The officers were able to stop Webberly from injecting the heroin and recovered the needle.
Webberly was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree and Criminal Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument.
A passenger in Webberly's vehicle, 26-year-old Jacqueline Dattilo, was charged with Loitering 1st Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree and Criminal Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument.
A notification to Child Protective Services was made and the child was released into the custody of his grandmother.
Both will be held overnight and are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on October 21.
