Neighborhood Eats: Caracas Arepa Bar

If you are beach bound this weekend or the next, you may want to try a snack by the sand with a true flavor from South America.

Located at Beach 106th street, right on the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach, is Caracas Arepa Bar ? a beach concession stand with a South American accent. The Rockaway location is an offshoot of the Caracas locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and offers beachgoers some sustenance after all that swimming.

Just stroll up in your swimsuit, and opt for some beach food - Venezuelan style. There are plenty of arepas to choose from, as well as fried green plantains or tostones. Some are topped off with a mojito sauce, which is not a sauce you drink.

The mojito sauce consists of cilantro, parsley and oregano as well as 4 cloves of garlic. It is then blended, and finished off with mayonnaise, salt and pepper. The sauce then goes on with a little lemon, white cheese and cilantro. It is called "tostones mochimero" - named for a Venezuelan park on the coast.

There is also a gourmet coffee stand, and nearly a dozen other vendors that are all operating at the boardwalk. These are all part of the Rockaway Beach Club project - exactly the kind of project the owner of Caracas wanted to be involved in.

However, if you can't make it to the beach, below is the complete recipe to Caracas' mojito sauce, so you can add a little South American flair to food of your own.

Mojito sauce:

Ingredients:

  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 1 bunch flat leaf parsley
  • ? bunch oregano
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 extra large container of mayonnaise
  • Salt, pepper to taste

    Directions:

    In blender place the herbs and garlic. Pulse until blended. Then add the mayonnaise and salt, and blend until smooth. Serve on top of tostones or serve alongside chips or toasted pita pieces.
