A transformer fire broke out in the basement of New York's famous Waldorf-Astoria hotel, injuring three people and forcing some guests to evacuate.

Fire officials say the fire was reported just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Manhattan hotel's sub-basement. The fire was brought under control about an hour later. Two people suffered minor injuries and another person was hospitalized with smoke inhalation. No word on the cause of the fire.

The landmark Waldorf-Astoria is a favorite destination of notables including heads of state from around the world. U.S. presidents traditionally stay there when they are in New York.
