For the first time in almost a decade, the doctors who treat pregnant women have issued new guidelines for exercise.
The reason for the new guidelines is to help pregnant women keep weight under control, both during and after pregnancy .
Obesity is also strongly linked to gestational diabetes.
Previously, the recommendations called for 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days, but the meaning of "moderate" was unclear to many women and to their doctors.
Now, the guidelines are more specific.
They have added light strength training, even during the second and third trimester.
Increasing the number of calorie burning aerobic activities is now also recommended, even if the exercise is vigorous.
A vigorous workout on a stationary bike, for example, can burn necessary calories in 4.7 hours a week or the same by light walking for 11.2 hours a week.
It's not mandated that you have to exercise, but you will probably have a better pregnancy and a better recovery if you do some form of exercise.
