Hundreds protest Yonkers school budget cuts

May 17, 2011 7:44:35 PM PDT
Hundreds of outraged parents in Yonkers rallied to protest massive school cuts due to a $42 million budget shortfall.

The raucous crowd filled the courtyard in front of city hall, chanting and pleading with city officials to reverse course.

Last week, 700 employees received pink slips and the district's prekindergarten program was eliminated.

The district says it's trying to close its budget gap, but parents fear the city is cutting too deep.

After the rally, the crowds moved to a city council hearing where many more parents and teachers pleaded with city officials to reconsider.
