Victory for purists in Coney Island boardwalk battle

In this file photo from Sept. 7, 2008, the entrance to Astroland Park is seen from the boardwalk at night in the Coney Island neighborhood of New York. A private arts group and New York City Hall are engaged in separate efforts to rejuvenate Coney Island that could lead to the reincarnation of the historic ocean side amusement complex with new year-round entertainment facilities, officials said on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008. There was a partial victory for purists who fought to keep the wooden Coney Island boardwalk free from concrete.

The city has abandoned plans to completely cement five blocks of the historic 2.5-mile walkway.

The parks department unveiled a $10 million plan to instead install a small concrete strip flanked with fake wood through those five blocks.

Some city officials call it a great compromise, but activists vow to fight it.
