Suffolk County police arrested 30-year-old Ana Rios, of Brentwood, for driving while intoxicated after she struck two parked cars and fled while her three children were in the car.
Police say Rios was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer west on Cypress Street in Central Islip when her vehicle struck a 1989 Chevrolet pickup truck that was parked in front of 35 Cypress St. at 4:30 a.m. The Trailblazer then careened across the street and struck a 2006 Toyota Camry. Rios fled towards Lowell Avenue.
A Suffolk County deputy sheriff observed Rios' vehicle traveling north on Lowell Avenue with front end damage. The deputy sheriff pulled the Trailblazer over and saw that Rios had her three children in the vehicle, a 7-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 2-month-old boy. The children were transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for observation.
Rios is charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated with child in the car, a felony under Leandra's Law.
She will spend the night in police custody and be arraigned on Thursday for charges that could land in her jail for 7 years.
The three children are now in the care of their grandfather.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
