Robbery victim murdered inside Brooklyn laundromat

December 21, 2010 2:15:06 PM PST
Dark and shuttered, the laundromat on the corner of Crown and Troy in Brooklyn is normally bustling with machines spinning and customers folding clothes.

It is silent now after blood was spilled and a life lost here.

"I see ambulances and policemen, and they were placing the yellow sign with caution," Miriam Schultz said.

It was just before midnight on Monday night when two armed men stormed into the laundromat and ambushed a worker getting ready to close for the evening.

With the change purse around his waist, it's not clear if the victim put up a struggle. He was shot twice.

He was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

"I was shocked. I was completely shocked. I thought it was like a game. I didn't think it was true. I mean for somebody to be killed for what? A few bucks?" Schultz said.

The victim, 45-year-old Yevgeniy Shamray, was a Russian immigrant who didn't speak much English, but neighbors and customers remember his smile.

Nidal Sarsour owns the deli down the street and says the victim would come in daily for something to eat or change for the machines.

Police have not made any arrests as they continue their investigation.
